When & Where:

Sat 22 & Sun 23 April

@ Cubbon Park Metro station.

The 4th edition of the Art in Transit Festival of Stories presents PADA SANCHAARA – a word voyage.

It emerged out of the need to understand this new spatial entity, the underground station, that has taken root for the first time in the city of Bengaluru. A space that we only pass through, the shape of which is hard for our minds to grasp.

Poetry and art create visual and metaphoric hinges upon which a commuter’s memory of the space can slowly develop, hence inviting it within the skin of the city. It includes a poetry event curated by Kannada poet Mamta Sagar where four poets, from four different aspects of Kannada poetic engagement were involved in writing a poem each on the Cubbon Park Metro Station.

Poets H.S.Venkateshamurthy, Sumathi Rumi Harish, Chand Pasha and Mamta Sagar visited Cubbon Park Metro Station and experienced it as a space that accommodates, reflects, reacts and responds to people and their experiences. Their poems are on display at selected spaces in the station along with a video recording of their readings.

Some words picked from these poems have been interpreted through Type interventions by artist/designers Manasee Jog and Saksham Verma. The intent is to draw attention to the form of the Kannada words independent of their contained meaning.

PADA SANCHAARA is an attempt to bring Kannada poems into the metro space and then allow Kannada words to wander around and interact with travellers in transit.

The festival also showcases artworks created by the students of Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, which include interactive installations and virtual reality experiences that explore synergies between art and science. Works in the form of books, post cards and T-shirts are also available in a pop-up shop ಮಳಿಗೆ, created as an intimate space of reading within this dynamic transit space.

Best regards,
Mamta Sagar
