Library inauguration

EVENT The library at the Bangalore SRC centre of Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts will be inaugurated this Monday The high-tech library of the Southern Regional Centre (SRC) of The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in Bangalore will get a slew of rare books from a private collection. The family of Prof. Srinivasaraju, author and teacher, has donated nearly 3,500 rare books that cover art, literature, culture etc that he collected during his lifetime. These will be made available to research scholars, university students and others at the SRC library. On August 27, Dr. U.R. Ananthamurthy will inaugurate the library at 11 a.m. Srinivasaraju’s wife Saraswathi N. Raju will be the chief guest. Prof S. Shettar, Hon. Director of SRC will preside over the function. The library’s present collection consists of 6,900 books (mostly relating to arts, literature and culture). Books in Kannada language find a special place. There is also a journal and newspaper section. The IGNCA, New Delhi will be soon strengthening this library by forwarding all the duplicate books in its possession. There is a library budget of Rs. 3 lakh and it is likely to be increased after the formal inauguration. Library automation, bar-coding, and labelling, are under progress. Desktop computers are provided for catalogue search and Internet access. Photocopy and scanning facility are also made available. Inter Library Reference / Loan facility is being worked out. The IGNCA was established in 1987 as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture, as a centre for research, academic pursuit and dissemination in the field of the arts. The arts encompass a wide range of subjects — from archaeology and anthropology to the visual and performing arts, enveloping them in a complementary and non-demarcated vision. One of the programmes of this centre, in collaboration with UNDP, is to utilize multimedia computer technology to create a wide variety of software packages that communicate cultural information. The establishment of the SRC in 2001 was aimed at intensifying the Centre’s studies on the southern region’s art and cultural heritage. SRC has so far documented important cultural festivals like Mahamastakaabhisheka in Shravanabelagola, gamaka, vachana renderings, folk songs, besides conducting seminars on arts and culture of south India.  ]]>
