Synopsis of the play ‘The Devil’s Tree’ Written, Designed and Directed by Padmavathi Rao Performance by: Aantarya, Film and theatre House For children above 4 years Duration: 90 minutes Venue: Rangashankara, Off 24th Main, Phase 2, JP Nagar, Bengaluru Date & Time: 14th April 2012 @ 3.30pm and 7.30pm Tickets: Rs. 100/- The play titled, The Devil’s Tree’ is based on a folk tale from central India. The touching and charming tale of friendship put to the test, unfolds on stage through shadow puppetry, masks and double roles woven together with fun and the joy of participation. A young tribal boy, Raju plays the flute very often by his favourite tree, The Devil’s Tree. For long, he is quite oblivious of the presence of the devil who dwells in the tree and is always delighted by his music. The boy’s friends however, do not care much for him or his music as they are too busy being sycophants of the Prince. A promise made and broken by the Prince leaves Raju heart broken. The boy returns to his tree and friend the devil. The enraged devil has his revenge by giving the Prince an unusual ailment that mars his looks. Only when the boy threatens to stop playing the flute forever does the devil provide the remedy for the Prince to return to his old form. The boy cures the Prince whom he considers his friend. The Prince now recognizes and even remembers the boy and his own promise. He offers the boy the post of the Royal musician. The boy makes a tough choice while the Prince discovers he is only half cured! His shadow still shows signs of an ailing soul. The play explores the meaning of friendship and the lack of it when it is withheld owing to preconceived notions of people and who and how one’s friends should be. It questions the idea of who the real devil is. Is the devil one who merely appears to be so or does the devil lurk unnoticed and well camouflaged within those whom we trust as our friends? To what extent do we go, to keep up appearances? Do we value traditional wisdom? Do we value people for who they are or are we taken in by what they are? How do we measure our success? Do we value ourselves by our designations or by our values and inner strength? These are some of the questions the play explores. For More Details, please contact: 9845632749 ]]>
